As one of the world’s largest wine companies, with operations in 70+ countries and over 2,600 employees to manage, Treasury Wine Estates (TWE) has complex needs and ambitious growth goals. It’s crucial that internal systems are efficient and intentional.
Pina Furci, TWE IT Project Manager, is part of a team that provides technology enhancements, maintenance, and support across TWE. When Microsoft Office 365 announced deprecations in its Power Platform, the team went on the hunt for a suitable replacement that would allow them to migrate their Nintex workflow assets from SharePoint.
TWE chose Nintex’s Automation Cloud for its ease of use, cost-effectiveness, and comparable value.
A need to migrate from Microsoft’s deprecated workflow engine
“While we still use SharePoint, the workflow engine we relied on to support many of our business processes was going to be decommissioned,” Furci says. “What’s noteworthy is that our existing Nintex solution is citizen-developed, which is a testament to the software. We don’t rely on a dedicated technology SME to design the Nintex functionality. So, we sought out a solution that would work with our existing system.”
Furci and her team needed to find an alternative that enabled them to:
- Migrate all active assets seamlessly and as-is away from Office 365
- Reduce or eliminate impact to operations during the transition
- Receive technical expertise to assist in the migration, including cleaning up redundant processes
In addition, TWE knew the value of empowering their employees as citizen developers, so they wanted a tool that was exceptionally user-friendly.
“We focus on employee experience and making it fit for purpose,” Furci says. “We didn’t want anything that was over-engineered or too complicated, so we could put the platform in the hands of our end-users to develop what they want to develop. Nintex is simple and user-friendly.”
Finding a functional and easy-to-use platform
Ultimately, the team selected the Nintex Automation Cloud, a platform with no-code and low-code solutions for automating workflows, streamlining processes, and optimizing operations.
“After a thorough evaluation, we decided to stay with Nintex because it provided comparable value, was more user-friendly, and was less costly,” Furci says.
Expert guidance through the migration process
Over the next year or so, her team laid the foundation for the Nintex engagement by:
- Conducting interviews and workshops to gain context around processes
- Seeking out core owners of existing processes
- Finding new process owners when necessary
- Determining whether processes could be retired
“Then we met with the Nintex team,” explains Furci. “They were extremely helpful and very supportive of making sure we migrated to the new platform seamlessly.”
Danny Toh, Nintex’s Senior Technical Engagement Manager, provided the support they needed to ensure the migration’s success. He helped TWE build out a custom project plan, breaking it down into five functional areas or “waves” so the work felt more manageable.
Throughout it all, TWE continuously turned to business users for testing to make sure a workflow functioned the same (or even more efficiently) as it had before. And while this kind of testing takes time, Nintex helped keep the project on track.
A successful migration with greater process efficiency
With the help of Toh, TWE successfully migrated to the Nintex Automation Cloud. The new architecture includes more flexibility and functionality.
The Nintex platform had a little bit more rigor and governance than other platforms we evaluated. It also had a lot more flexibility and functionality, which we thought was an enhancement to what we already had.”

In addition to realizing their primary goal of a smooth migration, TWE realized several other benefits with Nintex Automation Cloud, including:
- Creating more efficient workflows: The team had saved the migration of their most business-critical workflow for last, so they could gain sufficient experience with the system first. With Toh’s guidance, they successfully migrated and streamlined this workflow, improving its overall efficiency.
- Ensuring better governance: Nintex Automation Cloud’s functionalities support the company’s governance process. When a business user wants to build a new form or create a workflow, TWE’s Enterprise Applications Team provides access to their development environment to design and test it before producing it. Nintex Automation Cloud allows for clear ownership assignment and built-in workflow controls to improve visibility and facilitate governance.
- Experiencing fewer workflow failures: After the migration and implementation of the new platform, the company experienced fewer failures, saving hours and reducing operational overhead.
Now that they’ve completed the migration, the team has a clearer understanding of how they can use the Nintex Automation Cloud to drive results. In the future, they’ll document and automate more of their processes — and explore additional features and capabilities to get the most out of the robust platform.
Nintex was really great to work with. I’d easily jump back in and work with Nintex again.”
